Welcome to RunningOnEarth!

Running On Earth is a concept which was born from a passion for running.
That passion was instilled slowly to become a fact that running was a crucial part of my life. Step by step I explored the world of running, aware not to be dragged down by the abyss of excess.
Until today I always managed to handle reasonably my fervor ,but I still have many things to learn from running. All of us runners begin with the same purpose : we try to run a quarter of an hour as a way to ease one’s conscience: to loose weight or to prove to ourselves that we are still fit. Then comes the time when we try to run more. And next ,we want to compete with others in official races. Suddenly we discover that our objectives have evolved, and we want to go further.
Therefore, our resolutions must corroborate our aims: adapted and specific training, change of eating habits, sleeping times respected, efforts tests…Improvement is noted, distances get longer and we start dreaming of achieving until the ultimate, the myth : the Marathon.
Running has already become part of our lives ,a devotion, but we want more. We want to go beyond that distance. What is the next step then? Everything accelerates, we get attracted by the hardest and the longest races , we become addicted. But this addiction is controlled, healthy, good for the body and the soul, giving us momentum and openness. We are actually changing…we are better persons.
Once we have attained this stage: we start running in multiple races successively or even better, organize our own races, in our own perspective.
After a long time of reflection from my side, the decision was not easy but it seemed to be a logical outcome of my running track.
My mind was made up. I chose THE UNITED STATES ,a race from LOS ANGELES to NEW YORK. A little bit more than 50 days of joy, running 10 hours a day …A state of mind, a philosophy, a control of one’s speed , a moment for introspection, a little time away to look back at things, in order to improve, and to be more efficient in this life, while yours is changing forever. Out of all this Running On Earth was born.!

Water is essential (Part 2)

Is there a bigger error than not drinking when ou are running? Drinking too much maybe. For some time, various authors warned us about fatal effects associated to a too big water consumption during a running race. The conjunction of messages intended to prevent dehydration, of races proposing water point and runners' wide range, engendered numerous dramas between 1980s and 2000. It is necessary to say that to gulp down too much water is diluting the salt contained in the body ( hyponatrémie ). Problem is that our body does not support such a dilution and quickly reacts by nausea, vomits, loss of lucidity (and even unconsciousness), which could lead to death. It seems to be the case especially in the United States ! The studies led in Europe are much less alarming. The work led by a Helvetian team during the marathon of Zurich 2006, proves it. Among 167 followed runners, 5 only (3 %) developed a hyponatrémie by absorption of too excessive quantity of water drunk during the running race.

We are far from the 15 % of hyponatrémies reported in some studies. Furthermore, no runner tested in Zurich developed symptoms. In other words, the European sports authorities would not have to worry excessively about inherent risks to an overconsumption of water during the effort. But how to explain such discrapencies between the studies and the countries? Thanks to which miracle Europe would be protected from the misdeeds of the water?

By introducing the text, we reminded how much the reproduction of the cases of hyponatrémie was linked to a partially erroneous educational message ("drink before being thirsty ") to a more and more wide pool of runners realizing important distances in time (marathons in 5-6 h) and to an important availability in water (water point). On this last particular point, races organized in Europe propose mostly water point every 5 km while some races organized across the Atlantic offer an access to water every mile (1.6 km). In these conditions, the risk of surhydratation increases very much. This is the proof that by willing to do it so well , we eventually make it too much.
